Apophatic Limericks about the Unknowing and Ineffable
Effervescent Limericks about Water
In this age of Jesus Camp, televangelism and New Atheism, not many people still claim to be polytheists. But for the first 50,000 years of human history, it was undoubtedly the predominant worldview.
Some people of the modern era look back on polytheism with an endearing sense of nostalgia. They think of it like some kind of superstitious relic for story time. And what captivating stories they are!
In the end, a metaphysical worldview that recognizes a panoply of spiritual energies makes a lot more sense to me than giving all the credit to just one single, solitary God. With that in mind, I’ve written volumes of limericks about the many deities of ancient mythology. And here I’d like to reflect on the notion of polytheism itself.
Graven Images
The idols we honor are all dead and gone
Our ancestors’ images thoughtfully drawn
But the life force endures
And it’s readily yours
So relish the ripples that scatter the dawn
No Stone Unturned
Theologically speaking I praise promiscuity
Dishing out maxims with grand ingenuity
The will to impress
Makes it hard to express
So sometimes I sit with no sense of congruity
Parental Pantheon
Bow to the Earth and retreat from the Sky
A mother and father that none can deny
Love it or fear it
Acknowledge the spirit
Who brings us so low and then lifts us so high
Hallowed Be Thy Name
A disturbance of deities and holy devices
They promise salvation and offer advices
It’s hard to be sure
Which god to prefer
I side with El Shaddi, the One Who Suffices
Daily Bread Crumbs
The gods have been broken like breadcrumbs at dinner
Passed to the left from the saint to the sinner
They formerly flourished
But now we’re malnourished
And daily our spirits grow thinner and thinner
Young and Curious
Dungeons & Dragons informed my ontology
Heavily colored by classic mythology
Tainted by Satan
My mind was un-straightened
And still I refuse to produce an apology
