Evergreen Limericks about Gardening

Anyone who’s ever watched a flower being pollenated will have a hard time resisting the temptation to write a series of limericks about gardening. Nowhere is the cycle of life more readily apparent than in a small vegetable patch, where compost nourishes the seeds that become saplings, which will flourish and whither and quietly die.

Magical things take place in the garden. The greenery produces the very air we breathe. The birds and bees conduct their essential business. The vegetation provides us with ingredients for our ratatouille. And more than a few limericks have been born.

From the Garden of Eden to the Garden of your Mind, the following collection explores the importance of gardening and the profound role it plays in the human psyche. So I hope you can find some nuggets of wisdom worth harvesting.

     Photosynthesis
     With carbon and water plus light in addition
     Chlorophyll carries the key to fruition
               As nature’s slow cooker
               Assembles the sugar
     Providing our principal source of nutrition

     Habitual Growth
     As a flower that grows toward the light
     A person is drawn to what’s right
               Stretching with hope
               Like a heliotrope
     Though the source can be seen without sight

     The Apple of Eden
     There’s a tree in the garden with fruit so delicious
     Its sweetness suggestive of nothing malicious
               But a bite for mankind
               Would open his mind
     To a knowledge of opposites much too pernicious

     Simplicity
     The sages admonish edacious pursuits
     So soften the ego and strengthen your roots
               Don’t work up a swelter
               Over hunger and shelter
     But learn to subsist on intangible fruits   

     In the Garden of Your Mind
     Ideas all scattered like so many seeds
     One thought is planted – Who knows where it leads?
               All of them grow
               So watch what you sow
     The unfocused mind will run riot with weeds

     The Dawning of the Age
     The Axial Age of our modern millennium
     Spirits in bloom like a budding geranium
               Nourish your roots
               As ethereal fruits
     Come flowering forth from my quivering cranium
