Numerous Limericks about Mathematics
Untroubled Limericks about Taoism and the Tao
Today we are pleased to honor some of the most venerable painters in the history of western civilization. The following limericks may send you reaching for your paintbrush, or possibly a stiff drink.
To help jog your memory of art history, or fill certain gaps in your imagination, I’ve included a few visual aides as companion pieces to the poetry.
Sandro Botticelli (1444-1510)
There’s a bountiful chap Botticelli
Whose Venus exposed her pink belly
Banned from the cloister
To stand on an oyster
No wonder her feet are so smelly
Titian (1487-1576) & El Greco (1541-1614)
There once was an artsy Venetian
And everyone knew him as Titian
Though very provincial
He’s quite influential
On folks like Rembrandt and The Grecian
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)
There was once a Dutch master van Rijn
Whose portraits were perfectly fine
His powerful stroke
Exuded baroque
Just see how his canvases shine
Claude Monet (1840-1926)
There’s an artist by name of Monet
Who painted by light of the day
He mixed subtle hues
Of yellows and blues
And impressed the ma’damsels that way
Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)
There’s a genius named Vincent Van Gogh
Whose gold, sunny flowers could glow
In a life full of tension
He broke from convention
His left ear he had to let go
Paul Klee (1879-1940)
There’s a colorful painter Paul Klee
Who led the Blue Riders astray
His abstract expression
Left quite an impression
Escaping the worn out cliché
Franz Marc (1880-1916)
There once was a Maler from Munich
Who painted the town in a tunic
In World War One
He was killed at Verdun
His career was cut short like a eunuch
Diego Rivera (1886-1957)
Diego was married to Kahlo
Drew murals for people to follow
His portrait of Marx
It set off some sparks
The message was too much to swallow
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986)
There’s an artist named Georgia O’Keeffe
Whose paintings induce disbelief
Her flowers, exotic
Are truly erotic
And that’s why they come on a leaf
M. C. Escher (1898-1972)
There’s an impossible Dutchman M.C.
Who looked in the mirror to see
The lines of his face
All bending in space
In three dimensional symmetry
Salvador Dalí (1904-1989)
There’s a starry-eyed dreamer Dalí
Into wondrous worlds he could see
With sensuous rocks
And watery clocks
And tigers being chased by a bee
Fernando Botero (1932-)
Botero attacked with his paint
Burlesquing both sinner and saint
Each sacred cow
Was blasphemed, and how!
His mockery knows no restraint
