Limericks about Politics in America
Does a limerick have to have five lines?
Real life poetry is based on real life, and the real life behind this poem is obviously that of my daughter’s. But her life is also filled with fantasy and imagination, as any child’s should be.
The following poem was inspired by true events and real dreams, and written at the request of my daughter. Some themes in the poem are universal, while many details are quite specific and unlikely to be understood by anyone outside our family.
With that in mind, I hope you enjoy this snapshot into the dreams of Millie. Whether you do or not, I can tell you that she loved it, and that’s what mattered the most. But I actually think you’ll like it too, even if you miss an inside joke or two.
Every beginning begins with a dream
And visions of things that have yet to be seen
Imagining faces and places to visit
Some so exotic and others exquisite
Wake every morning and greet the new day
A little girl rises all ready to play
A young mind is bursting with plans and ideas
Subsisting on tacos and fresh quesadillas
Remembering Wuzzleburg, those were the days
When Dandelion children performed in the plays
Cruising Sixteenth Street, en route to the park
Return for a smoothie before it gets dark
While mommy and dad had a dream of their own
To sell their belongings, including their home
And head back to Europe to travel and work
Escaping the country where Trump voters lurk
Then one day they did it, it finally came true
They boarded a plane and together they flew
Arriving in Deutschland, according to plan
And next thing you know they were driving a van
The hopes and the fears were all rolled up inside
With the Man on the Island along for the ride
The nightmares bring vultures and creatures of prey
But with patience and time they would all fly away
From country to country their landscape expanded
She always took time to observe where she’d landed
But too many changes of scene can bewilder
The number of households had already filled her
Now what she dreamt of was someplace to settle
A kitchen with snacks and a proper tea kettle
A mattress for Max and a bed for herself
And a place to keep Cool Things on top of a shelf
So that’s how she wound up on top of the hill
In a school with a view where they never sit still
Always with friends in perpetual motion
No longer living twelve blocks from the ocean
In her free time she skis and takes trips to Andorra
Living the life of a little explorer
Two days from Germany, not far from Paris
Or maybe stay home and recline on the terrace
Drift off to sleep when it’s all said and done
And hope that the next day is just as much fun
But she opened her eyes and the dream was all over
The six-year-old girl had been dozing in Grover
