9 New Limericks on June Nineteenth
Limericks from Summer Vacation
Limericks have a special, if specious, association with Ireland. But bookworms and lit lovers the world over seem to appreciate the rhyming five-liner. From Lapland to Tierra del Fuego, everyone loves a well-spoken limerick. Even here in Spain, home of Lorca and Cervantes, a good poem never goes unnoticed.
The following limericks of and about Spain walk a fine line that veers toward the lewd and suggestive, in apparent violation of my commitment to lift the weathered genre to a higher plane. Call it poetic license, or maybe just loyalty to tradition. In any case, I hope these Spanish limericks make you smile as brightly as the sunshine over Andalucia.
There once was a man from Madrid
And you’ll never believe what he did
But along the Camino
He pricked his pepino
So these days he keeps it well hid
There’s an uncle who entered Iberia
In search of a mother superior
From Basque to Cadiz
The sisters he’d squeeze
But none of them met his criteria
There’s a hard-working Juan from Seville
Whom housewives adore for his skill
He knows what he’s doing
He never stops screwing
Just labors all day with his drill
There’s a Jenny from down in Gibraltar
Whose husband must constantly fault her
The honeymoon over
He franticly drove her
To dread what she’d said at the altar
There’s a trollop I know from Toledo
Renowned for her spicy libido
Fulfilling my wishes
With Mexican dishes
Her salsa ran down my burrito
I once knew an hombre who dropped off the map
Resurfaced in Spain with a girl in his lap
A fan of fiestas
He loves his siestas
So don’t interrupt his post-prandial nap
