Insightful Limericks about Modernity
Limericks about Apocalypse and Armageddon
The mind is a marvelous machine, capable of achieving such heights and yet also able to sink to such lows. And it seems that we can’t have one with the other. To deny one aspect inevitably reduces us to something less than whole.
You remember what Emerson said about the foolish consistency. The instability and tendency to rush out in opposite directions is part of what makes us human. Sometimes it’s a miracle that the human psyche doesn’t just splinter out into a thousand little shards of grey crystal matter.
The nature of the divided psyche has captivated poets and philosophers since the dawn of human thought. Continuing in that tradition, I’m pleased to present this series of thought provoking limericks.
Two Souls in one Breast
There’s a voice from within that can move us
Designed to advise and improve us
But I have to confess
When my feelings regress
There’s just not enough room for the two of us
The Dragon
Our reptilian parents they fought and fled fast
Bear this in mind should suspicions be cast
Lest you be shamed
The beast must be tamed
Our consciousness bulges from out of the past
In the Cockpit
Like the Millennium Falcon, a ship on the wing
A crew full of archetypes with something to bring
The wise man, the Wookiee
The loner, the rookie
And who, might I ask, is controlling this thing?
Passing Fancies
Psychic vicissitudes working cross purposes
One thought dissolves and another one surfaces
Feelings are fleeting
So watch as you’re greeting
The many sensations that consciousness furnishes
Yin versus Yang
Ruled by reason but bent by desire
Half of your self calls the other a liar
Thoughts can grow cold
With feelings untold
But the will can wreak havoc when flirting with fire
Internal Affairs
Like so many candles but only one light
Your foe is the left foot and you are the right
No matter who’s bleeding
It’s all self-defeating
You spar with your self when you squabble and fight
Conflict of Interests
A room full of demons and angels inside us
Fussing and fighting they chafe and deride us
With cognitive dissonance
Vicious ambivalence
Thus is the easy existence denied us
Quiet Vigilance
Shadows will draw you below your true station
With weakness and lack of sincere dedication
Be mindful instead
Of that voice in your head
Resounding in moments of deep contemplation
The Enemy
I have an acquaintance who sometimes appears
Whispering rumors of gloom in my ears
The discouraging voice
It leaves me no choice
But to wait till the dark cloud of hopelessness clears
Inside Job
A chorus of voices may whisper and shout
From the back of your mind raising questions and doubt
But never give in
To the skeptics within
When you call them by name you can drive them all out
