Limericks from Summer Vacation
Limerick Critics and Scathing Feedback
An important tradition in Limerick writing is the use of geography and place names. Some many of these whimsical verses sing the praises of characters known primarily for their place of origin. There’s the girl from Madrass, the man from Nantucket, the Uncle from Iberia, and on and on. So it’s about time I put together this collection of Limericks about California.
I’m a native of California myself, and though I’ve adopted the life of Digital Nomadism, I still have a deep attachment to the Golden State. From the soft sandy beaches of Orange County to the seductive curves of Highway One in Big Sur, California is loaded with memories and touchstones. So here’s a quick and comical tribute to the land of my birth.
The Surfers once owned San Clemente
Long before two thousand twenty
But new populations
Prove gentrification
Spells Beach Day for those who have plenty
There’s a Coast that got Lost up in Mendo
Where the waves make a crashing crescendo
It isn’t quite Humboldt
But don’t you get crumpled
It’s close enough we can pretendo
There’s a mem’rable man from Salinas
You’ll never forget if you’ve seen his
Distinguishing features
Just don’t try and reach his
Remarkable fourteen inch . . . mustache
I once found a freak show in Frisco
Where women all knew how to disco
Their pants were so tight
And their hair was just right
It was treated with handfuls of Crisco
There’s a passable lass in Van Nuys
With a quizzical gleam in the eyes
If you carefully note
There’s a bump in the throat
Of her otherwise flawless disguise
There’s a friendly young fellow from Hayward
Whose father’s afraid he’s gone wayward
While pouring my beverage
He leaned in with leverage
And wantonly whispered a gay word
Los Osos is often so hazy
And surfers sleep in cuz they’re lazy
A fine place for breeding
Where everyone’s needing
A LOVR that won’t drive them crazy
There’s an all-star third baseman from Chatsworth
Who likes to play ball on the flat turf
He signed some equipment
That’s ready for shipment
I just can’t be sure what his hat’s worth
Sorry about that last one. I have to admit it’s somewhat terrible. But that’s the uneven terrain of limericks for you.
